Our story
Our story begins with what we call The Knitters. You may be wondering what knitting has to do with gin; pour yourself a cuppa or a G&T and we'll tell you. A group of women meet every Wednesday known as ‘the knitters’. No knitting ever takes place, no wool is ever taken, but there is always a lot of chat and laughter.
You are probably still wondering how this relates to gin. In November 2022, 12 Knitters went to learn how to make gin at the ‘Spirit of Anglesey’ in Beaumaris. It was a fabulous experience and we each were able to distil our own bottle of gin with our own recipe. The copper stils were beautiful. Some of us even commented how great it would be to own one of these as it would look fabulous in a house and you could make your own gin. And that is where the idea for the Rhosneigr Gin Company came from.

At the beginning of 2023, we decided to plan 23 adventures for the year. Our adventures included things like climbing a mountain, and a month of Random Acts of Kindness; and, a very ambitious one of them was ‘explore setting up a gin distillery’ . Each adventure was allocated to a month, and exploring the gin distillery was marked for March. We envisioned a gin that embodied the feeling and spirit of Rhosneigr. We also undertook research including how to distill gin, meeting with a local historian to help with elements of the label design, identifying target consumers, and did a walking tour of gardens in Rhosneigr to help inform what botanicals we chose.
Distilling
We soon realised that setting up an actual distillery was a challenge too far; however, we found an Anglesey based distillery that would work closely with us. We explained what we’d learned and our vision and he is helping us bring it to life. He is being a HUGE support and we’re on a massive, but exciting learning curve!
Botanicals
We invited a group of knitters to join us and they are the gin support team. We have now developed our first recipes and then tested them with our group to create the final recipe. Each botanical has a connection to Rhosneigr.
We are committed to keeping the gin as local as possible
Working with people and companies in Anglesey and North Wales. The community of women here have been a great support and sounding board for our ideas. For us, our gin is about community, and creating a gin for and with our community. We are grateful to Lucy Covell who is helping us design the label and Erin Rugg who supports us in many areas, especially marketing.
One commitment we are very proud to make is that we want to invest profits from the gin back into the village. This is Sarah Doerksen‘s area of expertise, and she is helping us think about how to do this in a socially responsible way. We love and appreciate living in Rhosneigr, we’d love people to buy the gin who feel the same way and for them to know that for every bottle they buy, that means some money going back into this special place.
The gin will be only available to buy in local shops and bars in Rhosneigr, as well as on our website. We’re learning fast, working hard and if you’d like to know more about the gin we’d love to hear from you.
Investing in the Place We Call Home
We are a social enterprise at heart. Our profits aren't disappearing into distant pockets — they're reinvested into the village, the island, and the people who make this corner of Anglesey somewhere truly worth cherishing.
One of the ventures closest to our hearts is SAIN.WAVES Rhosneigr - a bilingual Welsh and English music festival that celebrates local culture, emerging talent, and the kind of joyful community spirit that Rhosneigr does better than almost anywhere we know.
But SAIN.WAVES is just the beginning. As the gin grows, so does our capacity to fund the things that make a village feel like home rather than a postcard: local arts, community projects, opportunities for young people, and everything in between.
Why It Matters to Us
We live here. We walk these streets, swim in this sea, and sit around the same tables as the people we've built this gin alongside. We didn't want to create something that simply comes from Rhosneigr. We wanted to create something that truly gives back to it.
So when you buy a bottle, you're not just getting a gin made with botanicals chosen from Rhosneigr's own gardens and coastline. You're part of something bigger - a quiet, ongoing investment in a place that deserves to be looked after.
